The goal for this course is to give insight and awareness to the participants reguarding alcohol related and mixed problems with-in their communities Also to be able to acknowledge and address these problems and to have the possibility to develop “Clubs for Alcoholics in Treatment” (CTA) in their respective countries. CTAs were created in the early 1960’s in Zagreb (HR) by a Croatian psychiatrist called Vladimir Hudolin born 1922-1996. At the beginning, they underwent great development in all the former-Yugoslavian countries. This also started to develop in Italy during the 1980’. At this present time, there are 2.500 CTAs functioning in all the regions. During their weekly meetings CTAs involve at least 25.000 families which means mainly 60-70.000 persons. The CTA’s use a family approach, this approach considers alcoholism as a disorder which involves all the family members. In other words, this problem affect all. A consequence of this situation is that all family members should also undergo treatment. Since 1990 CTAs have spread in countries like: North and South of Europe, South America and New Zealand and also other countries, obtaining an unexpected diffusion in different cultures and civilities. After a 3 year follow-up the Italian program shows a 60-65% positive result (total abstinence with no relapses). In this sense, these results are mostly the more positive ones you can find in literature. The social ecological approach also has an important preventive aspect because it tends to make people aware of the problem throughout a training action towards individuals and families. The goal is to change the community and health related culture. We can certainly say that the CTA’ activity in Italy, in the last twenty years, has seen a reduction of alcoholic beverage consumption by 34%. This 34% is without the help of strategic policies. In a society extremely permissive towards alcoholic beverages it appears that this type of program has a very positive influence. The participants:
